Yarn Bombing… What is yarn bombing anyway?
In a nut shell, yarn bombing, yarn storming, guerrilla knitting, urban knitting, kniffiti or graffiti knitting as it can also be known by is a type of graffiti or street art that employs colourful displays of knitted or crocheted yarn or fibre rather than paints or chalk. So now you know, dontcha just love it!
The craze that has literally spread across the globe has created some pretty amazing spectacles, true sights of delight in the most unusual of places.
It certainly spreads joy colour and much delight where ever it touches, and for those who aren’t so keen can be removed easily without causing any damage whatsoever to property!
We are all quite simply in ore of the splendid sights before our very eyes, with only one question on our minds….. why isn’t more of the world being yarn stormed?!
Look what we found today…
How fantastic are these guys!
The time, effort and skill have to be commended. The woollen walkers are particular favourites of ours here at Popup Wool.
WOOLLY BULLY “Charging Bull,” near Wall Street, was covered in crochet by Olek, an artist, last December.
This guy is just fantastic, so much time an effort to create the perfect finish. How delightful for Wall Street this must have been, the artists idea that the bull was a little too big and macho decided to cover him is a much less macho yarn.
“It is a global phenomenon, with yarn bombers taking their brightly coloured fuzzy work to Europe, Asia and beyond. In Paris, a yarn culprit has filled sidewalk cracks with colourful knots of yarn. In Denver, a group called Ladies Fancywork Society has crocheted tree trunks, park benches and public telephones. Seattle has the YarnCore collective (“Hardcore Chicks With Sharp Sticks”) and Stockholm has the knit crew Masquerade. In London, Knit the City has “yarnstormed” fountains and fences. And in Melbourne, Australia, a woman known as Bali conjures up cosies for bike racks and bus stops.” NYTIMES By
